How to Differentiate Patterns of Big Cats

Big Cats according to Wikipedia are the lion, tiger, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, cougar and any hybrid combination of any of these species. By the way, cougar is also known as mountain lion, puma, panther or catamount so don't be confused when their names are not in the list of big cats, because they actually are!

So, the problem that I've been facing a lot is differentiating them. How do you say which one is a cheetah and which one is the jaguar? Their pattern is almost very similar and is quite diffcult to tell apart.

And of course, we don't want to face an awkward situation in the future when you happen to mistake a jaguar for a leopard. Nope, not a good scenario.

Now, let's start with a simple one. Differences between a lion, tiger, and a cougar.
This is as simple as ABC and I'm sure you already know about their differences but let me put it here, just in case.

Lions have a light brown fur and they have slightly thicker and longer furs than other big cats. And of course, they have manes!

Tigers , in my opinion have the most beautiful fur among the cats and of course, the easiest to remember. It has black stripes with a prominent main color of orange.

A cougar on the other hand is simpler and much more alike to the domestic cats. They have various colors of furs, but most of them has a light brown tone.

Pretty simple, eh? Now, moving on to the more difficult ones, we have a cheetah, leopard and jaguar.

Being the fastest land animal on Earth, cheetahs have unique features on their body including the muscular thighs.Apart from that, the pattern displayed on their fur is also quite simple to remember since they're just black spots!

Next, we have leopards! Leopards can be found all across the globe so it would be a shame if you can't identify one. Here's a first, leopards have very small body proportions and they are considered to be the smallest out of all the 'Big Cats'.

They have significantly larger patterns with light orange as their main color. The spots are filled with darker orange and outlined with black.

Snow Leopards are basically the same but they've white instead of an orange toned fur. The coloring inside of the spots are also different being grey and not dark orange.

Finally, the jaguar. The jaguar has an almost similar pattern with the leopards but the differences are the spots. They have a slightly larger pattern and most of their spots are filled with random amount of tiny dots.
